About the Treatment
Botulinum Toxin is a naturally occurring protein derived from the Bacterium Clostridium Botulinum that’s used to diminish facial folds and wrinkles. When it’s injected into a muscle, it blocks nerve signals that stimulate muscle contraction. As a result, the targeted muscles relax. BOTOX® Cosmetic is the first and only FDA-approved product to temporarily improve both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet lines around the sides of your eyes. Repeated contractions from frowning and squinting are the main culprits that cause frown lines and crow’s feet. Botox Cosmetic targets the muscles that are used in the repeated contractions in order to temporarily reduce muscle activity thus creating a visibly noticeable, smoother, and less “wrinkled” appearance.
How does it work?
Botulinum toxin is one of the most poisonous substances known to man. Botulinum toxin can be injected into humans in extremely small concentrations and works by preventing signals from the nerve cells reaching muscles, therefore paralyzing them. Botulinum toxin is administered by diluting the powder in saline and injecting it directly into neuromuscular tissue. It takes 24-72 hours for botulinum toxin to take effect. In very rare circumstances, it may take as long as 5 days for the full effect of botulinum toxin to be observed.
Who is a good candidate for this Treatment?
The best candidates for Botox treatments are people who are physically healthy, with no history of neuromuscular diseases (such as multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis), who are not pregnant or nursing and who are at least 18 years old. You should inform your doctor of your medical history and all medications, vitamins and herbal supplements you are currently taking before having Botox treatments.
